How to use the Video to MP3 converter
- Drop the video files in, whatever their format.
- Choose an MP3 bitrate or the VBR option.
- Convert and download the MP3s singly or as a ZIP.
Every soundtrack ends up as MP3
Behind the picture, videos store sound in many codecs: AAC in phone and camera MP4 and MOV files, Opus or Vorbis in WebM, AC-3 on DVDs, WMA in WMV, MP2 in MPEG. ffmpeg decodes whichever one is there and LAME writes the MP3, so the result plays in a car, on a phone or in DJ software.
Only the first audio track is taken. In a film with several dubs, that is normally the default language.
Surround tracks and speech
MP3 holds two channels at most, so 5.1 film audio is folded down to stereo. The centre channel, where dialogue lives, goes into both sides and stays easy to follow.
Lectures and interviews recorded in stereo can be switched to Mono under More settings, halving the file at the same bitrate.
Why it is quick
Only the audio is decoded; the frames are skipped. An hour of 4K MKV therefore takes roughly as long as an hour of podcast, with the time spent reading through the file rather than on the picture.
Want the soundtrack untouched instead? When a video carries AAC, choosing M4A in the audio converter copies the track without re-encoding it.
Questions
Why does a big MKV pause before starting?
The file is scanned to locate the audio packets. Once found, extraction moves quickly.
Can I get WAV or FLAC instead of MP3?
Yes. The audio converter takes video files too and lets you pick those formats.
What does the VBR option do?
LAME varies the bitrate with the music, spending more on busy passages and less on quiet ones. For music it settles around 190 kbps; speech usually needs less.
Can I mix formats in one batch?
Yes. Drop MOV, MKV, WebM and MP4 files together and each gets its own MP3, named after the source video.
