Convert FLAC to MP3

A FLAC library is the right thing to keep at home, yet plenty of car stereos, DJ controllers and older phones accept nothing but MP3. This page makes MP3 copies of whole albums without installing a ripper, and your FLAC files stay exactly as they are.

How to use the FLAC to MP3 converter

  1. Drop an album folder or pick individual FLAC tracks.
  2. Use 320 kbps if quality comes first, or VBR when lighter files matter more.
  3. Convert, then download the album as one ZIP.

The best starting point

FLAC is an exact copy of the original audio, so an MP3 made from it is the cleanest MP3 possible. 320 kbps constant bitrate is the top of the MP3 scale; the VBR setting (LAME V2) averages about 190 kbps and is indistinguishable from the source for most music.

A four-minute song that takes 25–35 MB as FLAC comes out near 9.6 MB at 320 kbps and roughly 6 MB with VBR.

Hi-res files and tags

High-resolution 24-bit FLAC recorded at 96 or 192 kHz is brought down to a rate MP3 can carry, 48 kHz at most. No lossy format keeps that extra resolution.

The FLAC’s title, artist, album and track number end up as ID3 tags in the MP3. Album pictures stored in the FLAC are not copied, so a player may show a blank square until you add art.

For the car and the gym

USB sticks for car head units and small MP3 players are the usual destination. A 320 kbps copy sounds close to CD on those devices and avoids the skipping some of them show with FLAC’s higher data rate.

A CD-length album usually converts in under a minute on a laptop, track after track.

Questions

Can I turn MP3 back into FLAC?

The audio converter can, but the FLAC will only hold the MP3’s quality in a larger file.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding happen in your browser.

Should I choose 320 kbps or VBR?

320 kbps is the safe pick for a car or DJ set where every track should be top quality. VBR saves about a third of the space with little audible difference.

Does the album keep its track names?

Yes. Each MP3 keeps the file name of its FLAC, and the tags inside carry the title and track number.
