Convert HEIC to JPG

Photos AirDropped, emailed or copied off an iPhone usually arrive as .heic files, and Windows PCs, Android phones and video editors often cannot open them. This page decodes HEIC with libheif compiled to WebAssembly and saves each picture as a JPG, without the photos ever leaving your device.

How to use the HEIC to JPG converter

  1. Drop your iPhone pictures in, for example a folder copied from the phone over USB or an iCloud download.
  2. Keep quality at 90 if the photos are going into a video project or a print, or use about 80 for chat and email.
  3. Convert and save the JPGs individually or zipped together.

Getting phone shots into an edit

iPhones have saved HEIC by default since iOS 11 because it needs about half the storage of an equivalent JPG. Many editing and slideshow tools still expect JPG, so a batch conversion before importing saves a lot of failed drags onto the timeline.

Plan for the size jump: at quality 90 a JPG is commonly around twice the size of its HEIC. Under More settings you can set a width, such as 1920 pixels for a full HD project, to keep the files manageable.

Live Photos, rotation and location

A Live Photo is two files, a HEIC still and a short MOV clip. This page converts the still; the MOV is a separate video file. A HEIC that holds several images, such as a burst, gives you the first one.

Portrait shots are rotated upright before saving. The JPG is written without EXIF, so the phone model and GPS position stay behind, which is handy before posting pictures publicly.

Questions

Do I need the HEIF extension from the Microsoft Store?

No. The decoder ships with this page, so nothing has to be installed on Windows.

Is the capture date kept?

No, EXIF is not copied. Keep the HEIC originals if you sort your library by date taken.

Can the iPhone shoot JPG instead?

Yes. Under Settings → Camera → Formats, pick Most Compatible; future shots will take up more space on the phone.

Which fill colour is used for transparent HEIC images?

White by default. Transparency is rare in phone photos, but if a file has an alpha plane you can switch the fill to black or light grey under More settings.
