Compress WebP

WebP has become the default format for thumbnails and pictures on many sites, and editors often export it at a needlessly high setting. This tool re-encodes still WebP images with libwebp on your device to cut them down, keeping them as WebP.

How to use the WebP Compressor

  1. Add the still WebP files you want to slim down.
  2. Choose a quality; 70 is the starting point, which suits most photos and thumbnails.
  3. Optionally enter a size in KB, raise Effort or set a smaller width under More settings.
  4. Run it and download the results individually or together as a ZIP.

How much you can expect

It depends on where the file came from. Pictures already served by an image CDN are usually packed tight, so only a modest slice comes off. A WebP exported at 90 or above from an editor, or a lossless WebP of a photo, often loses half its size or more.

Dimensions are the strongest lever. A thumbnail uploaded at four times the size it is shown carries most of its weight in pixels nobody sees; a width or percentage under More settings fixes that in the same pass.

Limits worth knowing

The output is always lossy WebP at the quality you set, with transparency kept. A lossless logo or screenshot may not shrink when encoded that way, and when nothing is gained the original comes back as it was.

Animated WebP files are rejected with a message instead of being cut down to a single frame without warning. Use a GIF or video tool for moving pictures.

Questions

Does anything get uploaded?

No. libwebp runs as WebAssembly in this tab, so unreleased thumbnails and client artwork stay on your machine.

Can I get a WebP below 100 KB?

Yes. Type 100 as the KB target. The tool settles on the best quality that stays under it and reduces the pixel size only if quality alone is not enough.

Can I turn the WebP into a JPG here?

No, this page keeps WebP. Use WebP to JPG when an app or upload form refuses the format altogether.

Which quality works for thumbnails?

Somewhere around 70–80 is usually clean. Under about 60, fine edges and small text begin to smear.
