Convert JFIF to PNG

A .jfif is a JPEG with an unusual extension. When you want to crop it, add text for a thumbnail or keep editing without stacking more compression, a PNG copy is the safer working file. The decode and the PNG encode both run on your device.

How to use the JFIF to PNG converter

  1. Choose the .jfif or .jpe files.
  2. Shrink the dimensions under More settings, if needed.
  3. Convert and download the PNG files.

What a PNG copy gives you

The picture looks the same as the JFIF, including any blockiness the original JPEG compression left; nothing is repaired. What changes is that further saves no longer lose detail, so you can annotate, retouch and export as often as needed.

If you only need the file to upload somewhere, renaming it with JFIF to JPG is faster and keeps it small. PNG earns its extra weight when the picture is going into an editor or a video project for more work.

Size and orientation

Stored losslessly, a photo takes several times the space of its JPEG source. Shrinking the dimensions under More settings is the best way to keep the PNG manageable.

A rotation flag in the original is applied to the pixels, so the PNG stands the right way up in every program.

Folders of downloads

Drop the whole downloads folder; .jfif files are converted and anything else is skipped with a note. Names carry over, so frame-12.jfif becomes frame-12.png.

Once the page has loaded, the work needs no connection, because nothing is sent to a server. That also means no queue and no cap on how many pictures you bring.

Questions

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. There is no alpha in JPEG data, so every pixel of the PNG is solid.

Is the PNG optimised?

Yes. It is recompressed with OxiPNG, which keeps every pixel and trims the file.

Does it work on a phone?

It does, in up-to-date mobile browsers. Very large pictures can run short of memory on older handsets, so scale those down first.

Does camera information come along?

No. The PNG is written without the EXIF block, so details such as the camera model or a GPS position are left behind.
