How to use the GIF to PNG converter
- Add the GIF files.
- Optionally change the size under More settings.
- Convert and download each PNG, or all of them together.
First frame only
The PNG is a single still made from the opening frame. When a GIF is animated, the rest of the frames are not part of the result. To keep the motion, a GIF or video tool is the place to go.
Plenty of GIFs from older websites, such as buttons, badges and logos, hold just one frame. For those the PNG is a complete and exact copy.
Transparency and palette
GIF can mark one colour as fully see-through, and that carries over to the PNG, so stickers and emotes still sit cleanly on top of other images. Edges stay as hard as they were.
A GIF never has more than 256 colours. OxiPNG notices this and saves the PNG as a palette image, which often makes it smaller than the GIF itself.
Why bother converting
Slide software, word processors and print services sometimes show GIFs with shifted colours or refuse them, while PNG is handled reliably. The same goes for many video editors when a GIF logo is meant to sit still in a corner of the frame.
PNG also allows pixels that are only partly see-through. After converting, an editor can feather the outline or add a soft shadow, which the single on-off transparency of GIF never permitted.
Questions
Can I choose which frame to save?
No, this tool always takes the first frame.
Can I enlarge a small GIF?
Yes, under More settings, but scaling up softens it. Pixel art looks best at its original size.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The GIF is decoded and the PNG written inside this tab, with no limit on how many files you add.
Will the PNG be bigger than the GIF?
Often it is smaller, thanks to palette storage. A GIF scaled up under More settings will grow, since there are more pixels to keep.
